I am extremely impressed with the author’s approach to this difficult topic. It is written for the intermediate photographer who has basic camera skills and wishes to sharpen his portrait skills. The book takes an excellent approach. The author shows a great photograph, and then she walks you through the process she used to get it. Many books on this subject omit that part. She goes into the nuts and bolts, especially the use of reflectors to enhance natural-light photography. She shows the ideal portrait, then shows a “back away” shot so that you can see how she set it up. She gives the best description of the use of natural light I have ever seen, especially how to use indirect light from windows. She goes into detail about how to use various aperture settings to achieve different effects, depending on the intended message of the photograph. She does a very good job of describing how to create different moods with portrait photographs. Each photo lists the ISO, shutter speed, and aperture settings.

The book assumes you have a basic understanding of how to use your camera. It doesn’t take you to the “professional” studio level of very elaborate and expensive equipment. For example, she shows how to use a Chinese lantern and a common shoplight to produce a great soft-lighting effect. She also shows how to use common fabrics as a diffuser to produce more pleasing tones and contrast. She was able to achieve lightbox effects with minimal expense, and gives details on how to do it. She even goes into detail on which bulbs from your hardware store will work and which won’t, and why. I’ve never seen that in another book.

The book is definitely for the “pro-sumer,” the proficient non-professional. The tips on using reflective surfaces is worth reading the book for. I’ve gotten many great ideas from this book. Very highly recommended.

The breadth of content in this exceeded my expectation although I was already familiar with the “look” of the Wiley Photo workshop books. Starts with the basics of equipment, light, connecting with your subject and then moves into some practical considerations for composition, design elements. Large section gives great tips for capturing family groups, kids, babies and action shots and the book ends with postproduction hints. Exercises to try are at the end of the chapters and there are examples and hints on every page. Even found tips about photographing more elderly subjects which I have found hard to track down elsewhere.
This is a visually appealing workbook loaded with practical hints and information for those beginning their portrait photography. After an intial read, I have gained the confidence to approach someone and organise a portrait shoot.
